Network effects. The bigger it gets the faster it gets bigger.

Like a black hole. More mass increases the field of gravity attracting more mass, and on and on. Or the telephone. One had no value because there was nobody to call. Two, some value. Twenty, still more value, etc.

Yahoo just started Yahoo Clubs. Sorta like Silicon Investor but for other interests. A user can set up a thread and start a discussion group.

Excite followed. Now, who do you think will prosper and who perish? My bet is Yahoo will, because that's where the users are and the more likely your thread will get more participants. The more participants, the more value to attract more participants...network effects.

Now Yahoo's pretty smart. Yahoo Clubs has no content costs, but it is the perfect medium for interest-targeted banner advertising...the stuff they get their highest advertising rates for.
