Rudedog,

While I'm sure I'm not getting 115,200 bps, I am VERY Positive that I'm getting more than 28.8K. I had a 33.6 3COM PC CARD for my Toshiba and the internal 33.6 for my Compaq. My new VIKING 56K just blows both out of the water. The speed comparision is no contest. The Viking seems almost 3 times as fast. Besides for directly downloading programs and stuff like that my new Viking Card seems to be almost faster than my T1 connection at work.

As for ISPs I think the majority of them are now V.90 compatible, and getting connection above 33.6 is the norm rather than the exception.

As for my Compaq...something is wrong. There can be no doubt about it. Why can I connect with the Toshiba/Viking 100% of the time while I'm lucky if I can connect with my Presario/Viking 20% of the time. I'm not talking about speed of the connection..I'm talking about actually getting connected. This isn't the first time I've had problems with this either. With my previous ISP, I had a lot of trouble connecting with my Compaq/33.6 internal modem while my Toshiba/3COM ALWAYS connected.

This much is CERTAIN:
1)The new Viking card is working and its fast. Compression allows for more than 56K. My Toshiba proves this.

2)Nothing is wrong with my phone line or ISP. My Toshiba Proves this.

3) Something is WRONG with the Compaq presario.

I'm not going to even tell you how many times my Presario 5030 crashes. i thought it was Windows 98 until I read the Compaq forum. It seems something is wrong with the machine's software itself. At least Compaq is addressing this problem.
