Jim has focused on the low and mid-range masks, leaving the very costly (in R&D efforts required) high-end market to PLAB and DPMI. I believe that the "leading edge" mask market is very limited, since most of these players either have a captive mask shop (IBM, Intel), or are involved in a cooperative mask effort (as are Motorola, AMD, and Micron Technologies with the DPMI joint-venture). That means that very few high-end masks are actually purchased on the open market. Jim has carefully watched his costs, and has a very efficient operation. As long as he holds course, I think that he will outperform PLAB and DPMI. His lack of exposure to Asia was pure serendipity, but he can lever that into a strong position.
