SAN FRANCISCO -- As autumn wore on, the early-morning drives from Mike Mahoney's home in Burlingame, Calif., down the peninsula separating Silicon Valley from San Francisco, grew darker daily. So did the prospects for the riskier, mid-cap stocks in his $1.3 billion AIM Global Telecommunications fund, the biggest dedicated telecom fund. ....

...Mahoney puts in a call to one of his favorite analysts, Stephanie Comfort, who covers new telco for Morgan Stanley Dean Witter. He wants to know about a fiber-optic deal between one of his holdings, undersea cable concern Global Crossing (GBLX:Nasdaq), and Viatel (VYTL:Nasdaq), which is building networks in Europe.

Viatel is still too small for Mahoney's fund, but he's been following its progress. They talk about everything from transmission technology to right-of-way through French farmland, then move on to small talk about their families.

"She's a good analyst and a nice person," says Mahoney. "Even if there's no business value in talking about her family, that's just the way I prefer to live my life. It would be sad to go through 20 years of this stuff and not have personal relationships." .....
