Blake, you have been diligent. I checked the numbers for AMAT using
the WSJ briefing book as a source. Then I checked Yahoo. They're
all different. WSJ has FY97 earnings at $1.32, Yahoo has $1.57.
The P/E shown at Yahoo seems based on the prior fiscal year.
To know the true numbers one would have to go through the 10Qs.
From WSJ I get $1.61 for the sum of the last 4 quarters. There is
the "Big Charts" site which gives you the option of charting
rolling EPS. Their number is different still.

I'm not sure any of this would give a clue as to which way the
price will move. If you gave some experienced investor recent
company news without revealing the company name, he wouldn't
touch the stock. But price action tells me that the stock is
in demand. (or was in demand till Friday - Monday could be a
different story).
