Companies sometimes give away their Beta version of the softwares to its customers to test the reliability of their products. Once the products are finalized and prove to be marketable, then they will start to charge or integrate this feature with another products. So nothing is wrong. NSCP did the same thing, and many software companies did that too. I think you can download a lot of freeware from the Net nowadays !!!!!!!!!!!!
