Aware's DSL Lite Technology Compliant
With New ITU Standard

BEDFORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 23, 1998--Aware, Inc. (NASDAQ:AWRE -
news), a worldwide leader in xDSL technology and a pioneer of splitterless ADSL (Asymmetric
Digital Subscriber Line), applauds the adoption by the International Telecommunications Union
(ITU) of the G.Lite standard, known as G.992.2.

Yesterday in Geneva, the ITU reached an agreement on the technical specifications for a G.Lite
digital subscriber line high-speed Internet modem technology, paving the way for quick
introduction of products to the market. This agreement means consumers will benefit from the
rapid delivery of G.Lite products and services into homes and businesses over regular phone
lines. G.Lite services transmit Internet data up to 25 times faster than today's fastest analog
modems, without requiring voice-data splitters at every home.

''Aware is committed to propagating its technology through an open standards process and has
been very active at both the ITU and the Universal ADSL Working Group. We believe that the
existence of a single global standard will accelerate the mass market deployment of ADSL,'' said
Michael Tzannes, president and chief executive officer of Aware, Inc. ''This landmark event puts
Aware and its customers in a very strong market position.''

Aware provided key technical submissions to the standards committee involving splitterless DSL
Lite technology, which alleviates the costs and inconveniences associated with a phone
company's technician needing to install splitters at the home. Aware also provided
low-complexity algorithm technical submissions that enable lower costs of DSL Lite services for
consumers.

As a leading developer of DSL core technology that enables high-speed Internet access over
existing telephone networks, Aware has already developed technology that implements the new
standard. Analog Devices, Lucent Microelectronics and Siemens Semiconductor have licensed
technology from Aware for ADSL chipsets that will be compliant with the newly approved ITU
G.Lite standard.
