If you have a product that's clearly better than the competition, is it really that hard to market it?

Here's a couple of examples:

1) Intel Pentium vs. AMD 486. This lasted for 2 years. We'll never know if Intel's marketing is effective because AMD didn't have a competitive product.
2) AMD K6 vs. Intel Pentium Pro. The K6 is clearly the better choice for laptops. We'll know for sure after AMD starts manufacturing, but I've no doubt that it will sell well in that niche. They might even sell every chip they make.
