AMD is the only company that Intel can point to, at least whose products are very close to Intel's main ones, that is enjoying even a modicum of success right now (1¢ a share 3Q98!!!). The FTC could be a lot more of a pain than AMD if Intel really tried to, and succeeded in, driving AMD out of business. If AMD died, you'd drop all the way down to NSM for direct competition. The FTC would be all over Intel like white on rice.
