If I can offer a different view I would say that if IBM's ability to
influence their end-user customer set ("IT partners") was limited to
non-existent then IBM's services business would not be exploding. In
fact, IBM account teams have probably more influence today then ever
before since resources are allocated across business units so the
entire IBM iceberg is available whereas in the past the customer had
to rely on what was available for the most part locally in the local
IBM branch. The outsourcing and mega-deals would not happen if IBM
was not considered a partner. As an aside, OS2 is still a major
server operating system for Fortune 500 companies, in particular, the
banking industry (I dont know if that is good or bad!).
