Irritating to see the stock down on a up day isn't it?

TELIA LAUNCHES SERVICES WITH ALCATEL ADSL PRODUCTS

Paris, October 22, 1998 --Telia Flexicom, Telia's ADSL commercial service, which has initially started in Stockholm, Gothenberg and Sundsvall, gives residential customers access to fixed telephony service and the Internet at high speeds today, based on the Alcatel ADSL technology.

Alcatel's ADSL equipment has undergone testing by Telia since 1997 and in February 1998 the second generation ADSL was granted final approval. Since then deliveries have been underway. As of September 1st, Alcatel's third generation ADSL also got final approval by Telia. As a dominant supplier of ADSL in Sweden, Alcatel has so far delivered several thousand ADSL lines in more than 50 locations throughout Sweden.

Telia Flexicom ADSL service includes: five email addresses, newsgroups, five personal web pages (maximum 10 Mbytes each), and software. For this service, customers pay a fixed monthly fee and a fee per Mbytes transmitted. No timely based fees are applied.

ASDL is already in commercial use in companies, several communities, and with commercial real estate owners in cities like Malmo, Orebro, and Vaxjo. The community of Orebro has, for example, used ADSL to connect its remote LANs at service centers and schools to their central LAN. Several other communities follow this example.

In the South of Stockholm, seven communities are currently conducting a joint effort, using ADSL, to create the best infrastructure for their own administration, other companies, and the educational system. This network concerns an even greater population than Malmo.

Jan Kylhammar, IT-manager representing the community of Botkyrka, said "This effort will form the basis. The next step will be to create demand from which communities, the educational system and all companies in the region will benefit. By increasing the demand we will lower prices and we believe that this will allow residential customers to gain access to services like fast Internet access, video transmission, picture telephony, etc. The opportunities are many, the obstacles are few."

In several building projects in Sweden, commercial real estate holders are using ADSL to better attract customers for flats in highly competitive telecommunication environments. In Vaxjo, almost 3000 flats can use ADSL based services, with just one ADSL line servicing from 5 to 30 flats.

"In the future, we want to offer all our customers broadband access. Giving them not just the means for education and work, but to allow for increased contacts with neighbors and our company," says Goran Wendel, C.E.O. Poseidon.

Background Information

ADSL technology (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) maximizes the potential of the existing copper telephone wiring serving virtually all homes and businesses to enable access to a range of data and video services and the Internet at speeds ranging from 25 to 100 times faster than today's 56 kilobits per second analog modems. ADSL does this by putting data traffic on frequencies outside of the voice portion of the telephone line. As a result, customers are able to use simultaneously the data portion of the line while talking on the voice portion. Service providers also can install ADSL lines dedicated to data and multimedia services.

Incorporating asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) and DMT technologies, Alcatel's open, standards-based ADSL product line better utilizes the capacity of standard twisted pair copper telephone lines and enables service providers to deploy new services quickly while maximizing their existing networks. With Alcatel's ADSL approach, service providers can introduce high-speed multimedia services on a per-user basis without costly network system upgrades or expensive in-home equipment.

Alcatel's ADSL solution offers both speed and power adaptations, another combination unique to the industry. DMT technology enables the ATM transfer rate to automatically adjust its speed due to varying line conditions and external interference. In addition to flexibility and bandwidth allocation, Alcatel's DMT modem reduces power in the presence of interference from adjacent wires or other sources -- a key advantage for operators as it ensures that the introduction of ADSL will not degrade existing services or vice versa. Operators also can program the speed at which the modem operates in order to provide a fixed-rate service. In all cases, the system is able to determine and run at the highest achievable rate and report any line impairments.

Alcatel's main customers for ADSL technology are Singapore Telecom, the American operators Ameritech, BellSouth, Pacific Bell and SouthWestern Bell, Telia in Sweden, British Telecom, Bell Canada and more recently Guangdong PTA. Pilot projects have also been ordered by Korea, Japan and Denmark. Today Alcatel holds over 30% of the world market, making it the world leader in ADSL technology.

A world leader in telecommunications systems and equipment, as well as related cables and components activities, Alcatel operates in over 130 countries. Alcatel provides complete solutions and services to operators, service providers, enterprises and consumers, ranging from backbone networks to user terminals. Alcatel trades on the Bourse de Paris and the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: ALA).
