While the $50m order from US West for QUALCOMM's infrastructure is good news in that it demonstrates confidence in QUALCOMM's ability to perform, which is timely encouragement given the announcement of completion of Primeco's removal of Motorola infrastructure in favour of Lucent, it doesn't mean it is all good news for QUALCOMM.
Profit is the name of the game and for all we know, the terms of the contract were poor. Companies do sell things too cheaply at times. So far, QUALCOMM has not shown any inclination towards doing that, though they are heading in that direction with the underpriced Globalstar handsets. But competitive pressure can lead people to accept excessively low prices. So we don't have the full story yet.
Meanwhile, flogging the WLL horse a little more, Rajala wrote: "...those who have dough buy mobile, those who don't stick to their neighbor's phone." This sort of simplistic marketing ignorance always annoys me. People as individuals in a group are not binary, acting like an on/off switch although an individual making a decision is binary.
People act incrementally, people are a continuum, there is no actual DNA gap between chimpanzees and humans meaning you could change the DNA in infinitesimal amounts and never be able to say, well, there you go then, you've got a chimp. And you could carry that process on as far as you like, down to bacteria or smaller size. Despite the ignoramus religious cranks who celebrated the murder of a father of four who did abortions for women who wished to control their own bodies. Who also celebrated the murder of a homosexual man who was hung out, alive, to dry on a fence. Religious cranks should sit up and take notice.
Don't join the religious zealots Rajala. People are a continuum. Not all are rich or poor. There is a gradation. A continuum. There is a grey area where they might or might not have enough money for a mobile instead of WLL system. Given the choice, some will choose mobile, some will choose WLL, some will stick with the neighbour's phone, some won't use a phone, some will be deaf and will need a voice-to-script conversion phone to receive messages, some will be blind and will need a script-to-voice phone.
It's really very simple. Though I'm sure there will be a lot of grunting over that. Racists think in binary terms. So do religious cranks. "You gotta be in the group or extinct". Well, religious cranks had better be careful because they are creating a lot of dislike for religious cranks. Maybe a few bombings and shootings of priests will come back at them. Utu! Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth - I heard that's supposed to be part of their ideology.
