covered calls make since to me on a stock that you feel may be dead money for a while. so you sell your strike out of the money far enough that the chances of the stock reaching that price are pretty slim and now you get a return on your money instead of it just sitting there. i like the covered calls also on a stock where you figure out the gain that you would like and sell a strike for that price. if the stcok reaches your price and is taken away you have accomplished your goal.
