Maverick - Why did IBM leave AMD out of the UNIX Software pact it cut with SCO and Sequent?

Why is IBM including Intel XEONS and Merceds?

Isn't the K7 the Intel Killer Chip ?

Why doesn't IBM think so?

IBM unveils server software alliance

NEW YORK, Oct 26 (Reuters) - International Business Machines Corp.
(NYSE:IBM - news) said Monday it unveiled a software alliance to develop a single operating system that will run on IBM server computers that use the company's computer chips and others that use Intel Corp. (Nasdaq:INTC - news) chips.

Under the alliance, the Armonk, N.Y. computer giant, will combine its software technology with that of Santa Cruz Operation Inc. (Nasdaq:SCOC - news) and Sequent Computer Systems Inc. (Nasdaq:SQNT -
news)to develop a multiuser, multitasking UNIX operating system that runs on IBM and Intel microprocessors.

In a statement, IBM said it would make ''significiant'' investments for this UNIX system software that will run on entry-level to large enterprise IBM servers -- large computers that run corporate computer networks.

IBM and Intel are creating a multi-million dollar fund to allow software companies to develop programs to run on the new UNIX system software.

An IBM official declined further comment on financial terms of the alliance.

IBM wants the UNIX product line, which operates the master control systems in computers, to be widely adopted by other software and hardware makers.

Several companies have announced plans to make versions of UNIX -- a business computer operating system that faces growing competition from Microsoft's Windows NT -- available to run on Intel's
upcoming Merced line of chips, including Sun Microsystems Inc. (Nasdaq:SUNW - news).

Software makers SCO and Sequent will combine their UNIX technology with that of IBM to develop a new SCO product for Intel's lower-end Xeon computer chip which is used in IBM Netfinity servers.

The new version of SCO's UnixWare operating system will be available in the second half of 1999, an IBM spokesman said.

Sequent, a leading provider of high volume Intel-based UNIX systems, will play a key role in developing a new operating system for Intel's much-anticipated, next-generation Merced chip. Merced is set for release in mid 2000 and the alliance will time the release of UNIX software around that date.

IBM and SCO will market the UNIX system for Intel's Merced chip, a company spokesman said.

The alliance's UNIX products will be compatible with IBM Power Chip microprocessors which run on
in-house, AIX system software and are used in IBM RS-6000 servers.
