Goldsnow - I think all of those people (not sure about the communists in Italy) are essentially pragmatic politicians without ideological baggage - so don't think your scenario will play out for the reasons you fear. Blair, just to give two examples, is drastically cutting social programs, and made the Governor of the Bank of England independent of political influence - a big step. Maggie with a smile as many have pointed out - doesn't fit your stereotype at all. E
