Hi Pat:

Sorry I got busy there for a minute, here is the information you seek from Gartner Group/DQ in case you haven't seen it yet. I think it is 'kinda' skewed since the data does not include server shipments.Couldn't post the 'data tables' but you can go the website and see it,the URL is given below.

GartnerGroup's Dataquest Says PC Industry Prospered During Third Quarter of 1998<//b>

San Jose, Calif., October 26, 1998—The worldwide personal computer industry remains a strong market, as worldwide PC shipments surpassed 22.6 million units in the third quarter of 1998, an increase of 13.7 percent over the same period last year, according to Dataquest Inc., a unit of Gartner Group, Inc. (NYSE: IT). The U.S. PC market outpaced worldwide growth, with U.S. PC shipments reaching 9.5 million units in the third quarter of 1998, up 18.2 percent from the third quarter of 1997.

"Though some regions of the world continue to confirm the dampening effects of the financial turmoil in Asia/Pacific, worldwide PC unit growth remains healthy," said Bill Schaub, vice president for Dataquest's Personal Computing and Peripherals group. "Combined shipments in the U.S. and Europe comprise nearly 60 percent of the world's demand for PCs, and these two regions are experiencing exceptional PC unit growth."

IBM showed renewed momentum throughout the world, as it held onto the No. 2 position worldwide (see Table 1). The indirect vendors, Dell and Gateway, showed the strongest growth both worldwide and in the United States. during the third quarter.
...........
Compaq continues to lead all PC manufacturers with shipments of 3.1 million units. Unlike the negative growth its experienced in the United States., Compaq came closer to matching the industry growth rate worldwide (see Table 2). Dataquest analysts said Compaq's challenge with channel inventory strategies has been confined to the United States.

The direct resellers continue to outgrow the indirect competitors. Dell has now recorded 12 consecutive quarters of 50 percent over better growth in the United States. "It appears that Gateway's focus on the U.S. home market and IBM's return to the U.S. retail segment has produced excellent results," Mr. Schaub said. "Going forward, we expect the U.S. consumer market and the U.S. commercial market to become completely uncoupled."
