RTEC has a two-fold plan. Their original business is the manufacture of processor sub-systems for SUN, and other Sparc / RISC vendors. They use very clever chip design and state-of-the-art multi-chip module technology to provide Sparc computing power for the high-end desktops and servers. Their other business is the upgrade business which makes amazing sense for engineering workstations. The cost of software for these tools is about 3 to 4x the cost of the workstation - but it is licensed to specific systems by serial #. So if you buy a new workstation, you have the hassle / cost of transferring the licenses. If you go for the Ross upgrade, it not only costs less - but the software works without the hassle and transfer fee! They have products which upgrade the widely installed low-end Sparcstation5 to the latest revision of mother board with significant performance improvement.

I know the company as I used to be an equipment supplier to them and I heard their presentation at a recent conference. I have started buying RTEC for my personal portfolio.
