LONDON -- General Instrument Corporation (NYSE: GIC) unveiled it's DVB compliant advanced interactive DVi-5000+ set top and platform at the European Cable Communication (ECC) show in London, October 20th through 22nd. GI's DVB-compliant product line features a family of inter-operable consumer terminals, designed to enable operators to target their set-top investments to the applications they are deploying. The DVi-5000 is being designed to deliver a rich feature set including high-bandwidth TDMA return for interactive networking capability, MPEG - 2 digital video, Musicam Digital audio, and a powerful processing platform for the deployment of new software-based applications. The DVi 5000+ platform includes a built in cable modem and features GI's unique triple tuner architecture to allow consumers to simultaneously watch TV, surf the Internet and hold an IP based telephone call. Through its comprehensive line of headend-to-home DVB-compliant digital solutions, GI provides the cable industry with powerful platforms capable of delivering a wide range of applications such as video-on-demand, Internet access, community networking, IP Telephony, electronic programme guides and more.
"GI's DVi-5000+ enables a full suite of revenue-generating services including VOD, IP telephony, Internet access, and videotelephony," said Denton Kanouff, Vice President of Marketing for GI's Digital Network Systems Group. "Digital interactive applications such as Internet access offer cable operators a powerful revenue opportunity. By delivering new applications over their digital infrastructure, cable operators can offer more than traditional television programming. When deployed, the DVi-5000+ will be fully interoperable with other DVi models, including the DVi-2000, enabling operators to tier their set-top deployments to the applications - to make the most of their capital equipment investment."
GI's DVi-5000 advanced interactive digital terminal delivers an unprecedented level of processing and graphics capabilities for a DVB-compliant set-top terminal. Built around a high powered MIPS processor and a high-end 3D and picture-in-graphics capable graphics platform, the DVi-5000 represents the leading edge in next generation DVB-compliant digital cable terminals.
The powerful processing and graphics capability of the DVi-5000 is also supported by the unit's advanced digital networking capabilities. Offering a built-in cable modem for high-speed networking capability, the DVi-5000's unique triple tuner architecture enables users to simultaneously watch TV and surf the Internet or watch and talk using cable IP telephony functionality.
By combining the capabilities of the DVi-5000+ with interactive applications such as Internet-based software technology, GI will be giving the cable industry a preview of how an advanced digital platform can benefit TV viewers through new interactive capabilities that are extremely easy to use.
To demonstrate the flexibility of the DVB digital interactive set-top product line, GI is also showcasing Network Computer, Inc.'s (NCI) DTV Navigator integrated on GI's DVB-compliant interactive digital set-top terminal at the ECC show.
