Mary, There's going to be a ton of new PC-like appliances that are ready to debut or have just come out.
>>I don't get it. Just what is it that is going to replace the PC? What is it that is going to sit on top of every desktop in the world and in the homes for people to do business - answer the mail - pay bills - order stuff - look up things - keep track of things?<<

That's one of the things that Mr. Gerstner is sitting on. His knowledge of the PC industry is much much greater than us. He KNOWS product by product each and everything that IBM will begin selling over the next 12 months. He also KNOWS thru NDA's many of the products that other companies will offer.

The Acer XC is a great concept of specialized PC's doing one or two things and doing them very simply. It could be e-mail or surfing the web or videophones etc. Acer has excellent insight into the future of "computing".

The XC isn't the only product that will cut greatly into the traditional PC market, but it is one of the easiest to understand and visualize.
the fridge e-mail thing isn't too far off the mark either.
