we do have something to test whether he tells the truth regarding science, and his Nobel Prize lends credence to notion of his abilities. We take an enormous amount of what we [layman] "know" about modern science on faith. When we dismiss someone with an out of favor theory on AIDS are we really using our critical thinking skill or just going with the flow? A few years ago a lone MD had an idea of treating ulcers with anti-biotics. For years no one in medicine would listen to him so he just kept treating patients, and curing them. Finally he massed so much evidence medicine had to take him seriously. Today it is the standard treatment.
