John,

Thought you would be interested in a bit more info re: the rather empty "News Flash"..on NXTL laying off subs.

I talked with a person at Motorola who gave me the following info. Take it for what it's worth.

Nxtl has been talking for some time with several sources about going to a single contractor for their site construction. One of them was/is Motorola. Another is McCaw's holding company for his licenses in the 900 Mhz spectrum called RiverView? (something like that).

This may be the first step in consummating that idea.

This person also said that Motorola was unable to provide Nxtl with the number of new i1000 phones they required for adds in the third quarter. Whether this was the primary reason for the shortfall in adds or not, it certainly did not help. They expect the equipment shortfall to be covered in the forth quarter and for Nxtl to have a very strong 4th qtr in terms of adds. Of course the entire telecommunications industry traditionally has a strong 4th.

Can't verify these facts, but they do sound plausible. As with any story, there is always another side.

Rob
