Mark,

<<Put yourself in Gateway's shoes. Suppose you could make a deal with AMD to get exclusive rights to all K6 output for use in a new notebook. Would you risk alienating Intel? The prize would be the #1 position in notebooks, displacing Toshiba and Compaq>>

Surely you jest. Do you really think that corporate America is going to abandon Toshiba notebooks (i.e. Intel) for a Gateway AMD notebook. My guess....not at any price! Toshiba is the number one selling notebook in the world for good reasons and price is obvsiously not one of those reasons.

As for Gateway taking a chance on such a proposition, I think Ted is much too smart for that. He understands business and how it works. Antitrust has nothing to do with it. You shoudn't be so naive. There are plenty of covert ways to exert pressures without crossing any legal lines. For instance, next time Intel has a PP200 chip shortage they may choose to provide chips to Micron Electronics first instead of Gateway. Micron is currently not as big a customer as Gateway or Dell so they felt the PP200 pinch worse. I'm sure they would love to see Gateway or Dell burn bridges with Intel so that they may get most favorable status next time around. This is just one small example of how "biting the hand that feeds you" could come back to hurt you. Also when new chips come out (such as the MMX) I'm sure Intel's best customers will get first dibs.
