You hear all about RPM but nothing about Deb. They, Mustang or is it Stallion and Yggdrassil are stuck in or prefer old kernels and older perhaps more stable releases of software. That works except for drivers if you want to use new equipment. I have found old stuff as in ghostscript are definitely not better in some cases. Yggie seems stalled. They tell me they are coming out with a new release anytime soon. They were tentatively scheduled for the spring but it did not work. I think they are trying to incorporate something like RPM. In Yggdrasil they developer told me there is some feature in the 95 version where it checks all the dependencies when you upgrade or make kernel changes. It will also run and boot of a CD so you don't know whether a package is running off the CD or the HD except as you know what is installed. (for testing apps) Unfortunately they have fallen on hard times as it were and while they took on Arena development (an XML browser) they have not maintained the website that well and their mailing list server so you cannot get on their lists it seems..

Slackware has the package tool which is graphic based for adding tools from the CD. It works well and is no trouble. If they incorporated that feature so it would work off the net (who knows maybe it will) and added library checking and associated package checking where the program runs in concert with others then it would rival RPM. In addition the new CD's should be upgrade CD's not replacement thingies. They will allow you to seletively replace what you don't have but I don't think it has an upgrade feature.

Yggie had a graphical install that worked seamlessly and a good install guide in hardcopy. It also worked through the various drivers. Their phone support was good. The Linux bible which they published was also a good tome. It had all the How-tos and was fairly complete. No Linux Tome is complete in toto though. You need about 5 books to cover any direction you want to go. somebody has to write a better Linux book. I do recommned Linux Secrets by Bakrakati for Slackware Users especially. It is a life saver.
