Motorola CIG extends CDMA leadership with launch of Cellular One's
Phoenix service

Business Wire - January 02, 1997 11:34

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 2, 1997--Cellular One's launch of CDMA digital cellular telephone service in Arizona raises to 13 the number of commercial CDMA networks launched by Motorola's Cellular Infrastructure Group (CIG). Motorola CIG is the leading provider of commercial CDMA systems worldwide.

Cellular One launched its new CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) service in Phoenix on January 1. As part of a $53 million contract announced last September, Motorola CIG provided the new equipment for Cellular One's CDMA service in Phoenix.

Subscribers there will benefit from the near land-line quality of the voice transmissions which result from Cellular One's use of Motorola CIG's new 13 kilobit per second (KBPS) voice coders (vocoders).

"Cellular One is proud to be the first to launch the 13 KBPS CDMA advanced digital network in Arizona," said Greg Klimek, president of Cellular One. "We were first in this market with Motorola's NAMPS (Narrowband Advanced Mobile Phone System) and now with Motorola's CDMA digital service, our customers will experience unprecedented wireless sound quality."

"It's extremely rewarding to have been given the job of helping Cellular One to launch the latest in cellular communications in
Phoenix," said Jack Finlayson, corporate vice president and general manager of Motorola CIG's Pan American Wireless Infrastructure Division. "Cellular One has raised the bar in cellular communications by offering its subscribers in Phoenix this newest digital service that provides enhanced voice and call quality."

Motorola CIG launched the world's first commercial CDMA system in Hong Kong more than a year ago. It has since deployed commercial CDMA systems in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, San Diego, Chicago, Milwaukee, Dallas, Fort Worth, San Antonio, Austin, Honolulu and Lima, Peru.

Motorola is the only infrastructure vendor to provide all three of the fastest growing digital technologies -- CDMA, Global Systems for Mobile Communications (GSM) and Personal Digital Communications (PDC) -- for cellular and PCS systems worldwide.

Southwestco Wireless, L.P. is a subsidiary of Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile, one of the largest wireless service providers in the U.S. Headquartered in Scottsdale, Ariz., Southwestco markets under the Cellular One name and provides a full range of wireless services from voice and cellular long distance to messaging and data. Cellular One is the only cellular carrier in Arizona to offer digital cellular service, cellular Caller ID, Cellular Digital Packet Data, as well as the recently launched PCSNow(R), a zoned cellular solution.

Southwestco provides Cellular One service to Phoenix, Tucson, Casa Grande, Flagstaff, Miami Globe, Prescott, Payson, Sierra Vista and Nogales, Ariz., Albuquerque and Las Cruces, N.M., and El Paso, Texas.
