You're way off. The Republican party is the closest thing you'll get to libertarian in this country. It's a hands-off, leave me alone, get government off our backs, stop government from stealing our money, party.

Nope. You've got it wrong. The republicans used to be that way, when my parents voted for them. Goldwater was almost a libertarian I have heard (dont know if my parents voted for him, they may have, they were big Reagan supporters).

Now republicans have latched on to the most controlling of all control groups, the religious right. Fear any group that believes they have god on their side, because these factions feel they are above the law. Anyway imo anybody that supports the republicans now is valuing money over personal freedom, just generally. Of course I realize you have specific issues in local elections and all candidates should be evaluated on an individual basis. But, if you want fiscal restraint at the expense of personal freedom, vote republican. If you want tax and spend but liberalism on social issues, vote Dem. Obviously neither of these is preferable. The best case you can hope for is the situation we have for a Gov of California - a fiscally responsible Democratic candidate. He will win, much to the chagrin of the RR. Maybe us Californians will get lucky and the RR will move out of state.
