<<How could FORE do this? Everyone knows you don't build IP on ATM. We can't have ATMIP. The experts say scaling and manageable solutions aren't the way to go. They say it's IP all the way. It's CSCO all the way. They're wrong.>>

You're wrong all the way. Almost everyone knows IP can be carried over ATM. That's what ATM Adaptation Layer 5 (AAL5) is for: converting IP packets into ATM cells and vice versa. There are LOTS of customers running IP applications over ATM.

ATM switches don't care whether a piece of information is coming from a data application or a video application or a voice application. All they have to do is to carry ATM cells from input ports to output ports, and do it fast. And that's exactly where FORE switches shine: they're the fastest in the industry (take a look at the DataComm article on the subject). Cisco switches don't even get close to FORE switches in performance.

Now, whether this deal is hurt by the Asian flu, that's a totally different story. Only time will tell.
