Ali,>>>Do you happen to know how much is the total yearly income for this kid's entire family? Didn't you have a thought that there might be another reason for not buying the $500 toy? <<<
Acer did a market study that showed the number of families that had refrigerators, TV's, electric rice cookers, bicycles and that could also afford another large ticket item in the $500.00 range. The number was huge - and it was felt that most of these families would do anything for their little "emperor" (the one child per family thing). The target market was in the coastal cities with a total population of around 60 million people.
As it turned out, most of these families would do anything for their "little emperor" - only they wouldn't get them a second rate computer.
As anyone knows - those who have done business in China - the Chinese will not buy second rate stuff. That is why there is the world's highest per capita consumption of Rolexes, Rolls Royces, and Cognac in Hong Kong - and the buying pattern, it seems, has permeated the nearby economic zones in Mainland China and along the coastal cities.
The Chinese, in China, will not be a great market for some cheap cut down version of PC's.
Regards,
Mary
