I have posted this on the German liberal party (FDP) site:

' scaring? OPINION... why am I posting here....

Dear Asterix,

No, I am not trying to scare anybody. It is very good to hear that lots of
professionals in Germany are taking this Y2k issue very seriously, and are trying to
fix it.

However, I am posting many articles on this board for several reasons:

- To further raise awareness on this issue. At least on the federal government level,
Germany is clearly lagging countries such as Canada, NZ, USA, UK,
Scandinavian countries, Netherlands.

In those countries the federal government is *publicly* working on contingency
plans, as cvan be read on many different Y2k sites (e.g. look at
www.year2000.com).

- Also, I hope to get in touch with other Germans to see what actions can be taken
to enhance awareness of the problem.
(contrary to the US and UK, only now and then some major news articles on Y2k
appear. Recently Fokus magazine did a proper article. It is not enough to start
Y2k remediation in all small businesses and at local governments and smaller
electric utilities. Just ask around; and ask when they plan to be *finished* with the
work).

- In the Bundestag; almost no questions have been asked so far (the Green party
did this last year; see an earlier post on this board). There is no indication at all that
the new government plans of the SPD/Green coalition take a possible Y2k
induced recession into account. Compare this e.g. to the *Dutch* or the *UK*
government.

In my opinion this will rapidly change the coming months. We will discuss this again
in January 1999 (1/1/1999 and 1/4/1999 are critical dates; we will see much more
problems after those dates; and therefore more publicity).

Regards,

John
