Tim, what he might be referring too is chemisorbtion on diatomeceous earths, also know as molecular sieves. I have no idea where in nature you find truly amorphous silica (having chemisorbtive properties such a silica gel). The only naturally occurring amorphous silica is typically rapidly cooled quartz (a rarity) and as far as chemisorbtion, it "is dead like a door nail".
