Frank,
Thank you for taking the time to respond with thoughtful answers. Here's what my intentions were in response to:
>My interpretation is that the ATM conversion of voice traffic means the CLEC can multiplex both voice and data packet traffic through the backbone without needing 5Es or DMS at every CO, except at the final handoff in the megapop.<

>>I'd need to see the particular deployment plans you're referring to. Can you point me to the reference you are using to cite these potentials?<<

Accelerated Networks can apparently accommodate voice traffic on a single line using SDSL and DSP chips of some sort. SDSL does not provide for lifeline POTS support as does ADSL, because SDSL overlaps the 0-4KHz portion of the frequency spectrum. Therefore, Accelerated Networks is somehow converting the voice traffic from small offices to ATM cells to be delivered over SDSL and multiplexed in with other data traffic from the same small office. My original query was geared to understand how they can support voice and what is needed in the network to break it out at the CO end. I guess I should have mentioned Accelerated Networks to begin with. Anyhow, that is the vendor I am curious about--and wondering how your knowledge of voice over IP fits in with their model. They have a web page at:
acceleratednetworks.com.
