Sportster "WINMODEM" is software upgradeable. It's the cheap one.
I think it bites. Can't use it in DOS, UNIX, etc. Must be used from widows product. Software drivers are kept locally on PC.

Sportster faxmodem, voicemodem are upgradable with ROM (same function as an EPROM, but cheaper). A much better modem than windmodem, but does have the disadvantage of requiring user to swap chip.

Couier is the best. Upgrade via software to locally load modem code in flash memory. More expensive, better hardware.

I own all sportster models. Do not own couier, but wish I did.
If I had to do it again, I would not waste money on winmodem.
I have troubles with it being compatable with some windows programs, and I can't use it at all in LINUX, UNIX, etc.
