Cable modem provides a terrific cost effective way to provide business connectivity especially in LAN. Always on and cheap, but you get access to Timbuktu, too. Berkeley is on the Windows 2000 cutting edge of enabling this with compatibility in pervasive ethernet LAN. You need the ATM backbone to support the VLAN heavy load among many disparate businesses on the same pipe. You need the ease of management, QoS, and rapid scalability to pull it off since each business has substantially different demands for voice, video, and data. This is how FORE is rigging MSFT presently with local campus LAN. That model can be expanded when the cable is available. MSFT will be able to integrate the local model with their worldwide offices when ATT interconnects the international fiber pipe and enables downlinking to local distribution via ATHM. MSFT will also be able to sell and send their software over that network, the ubiquitous worldwide ATMIP network.
