Japan MOF Kuroda:No Movement This Week On IMF Aid For Brazil

Dow Jones Newswires

TOKYO (Nikkei/Dow Jones)--A senior official at Japan's Ministry of
Finance said Wednesday no agreement on International Monetary
Fund-led aid for Brazil was likely this week.

Speaking to reporters upon entering the ministry, Haruhiko Kuroda, head
of the International Bureau, said: "There's been no movement this week.
Maybe next week."

He was making his comments shortly after Brazilian President Fernando
Henrique Cardoso said in a speech late Tuesday that his government
would cut 8.7 billion reals from its 1999 budget as part of a fiscal austerity
program geared toward gaining the IMF's support.
