MPP is alive and well in the high-end (very high-end) commercial market, specifically the data-warehousing market. Typically these MPP machines have SMP nodes, so its not an either-or situation. At the very high end of the market, MPP is the way to go.

You may not know it but every day many of the worlds largest banks, retailers, manufacturers, and telecommunications companies are using these MPP machines to analyze your behaviour as a consumer.
These commercial MPP machines vary quite a bit in size. Although none are as large as the Sandia machine in terms of the number of microprocessors used, the largest commercial machines do use hundreds.
