Cabletron's SmartSwitches to Provide New Voice, Video and Data Communications Infrastructure
Cabletron Systems CS today announced its participation within GTE's comprehensive Pentagon infrastructure renovation. The new SmartSwitched network underscores the government's mandate for network longevity and supports the Pentagon's connectivity needs well into the next century.
Entitled the Above Ground Telecommunications Backbone (ATB), the new system will address network that directly affect critical decisions. Five above-ground floors housing over 24,000 tenants and 135,000 network connections will be reconstructed in five, two-year phases. The award-winning SmartSwitches will increase the network's speed and reliability -- transforming the building's computer systems into a single, high-speed communications infrastructure.
Consolidating multiple network systems within the facility, Cabletron's SmartSwitches were selected by GTE based on durability. "Cabletron is proud to have our award-winning connectivity products selected to facilitate information within one of the nation's most vital communications centers," said Stanley Stevens, Cabletron's director of product marketing, federal systems. "Cabletron's SmartSwitches have met GTE's and the federal government's strict standards for reliability, performance and a seamless migratory path, allowing them to function in a secure, cost-effective manner."
The federal government represents Cabletron's largest customer. Cabletron's award-winning Smart Networks, which include SPECTRUM network management and the SmartSwitch solutions, have been selected to facilitate such mission-critical applications as NASA's Mars Pathfinder, Fort Knox and the Navy's IT-21 ship-to-shore communications upgrade.
