....In France, Internet use has doubled this year to more than a million users and is expected to double again next year, after lagging growth in the U.S. for years. French and wider European demand is being fueled by computer sales, which rose 20 percent in the second quarter as the $1,000 computer hit stores shelves here, according to Dataquest, a unit of Gartner Group.
Also priming growth in France is a flurry of new Internet services, which are encouraging people to switch from the Minitel, an electronic phone directory limited to France that offers home banking and other basic retail services. The Minitel is used by 35 million people in France and is provided by France Telecom SA, the country's dominant phone company.
Mounting Internet demand is catching the attention of advertisers, a new income source that Infonie wants to tap. It recently bought 40 percent of Hi Media Multimedia, which sells advertising space on the Web. It also acquired a French Internet search service and 15 percent of Caramail, a web site with free e-mail services....
