Dell has produced a reasonable 'surf' model to get a toe in the water in the storage business without the big r&d that the other players are spending. Clariion was a good choice, Mike Lambert tried to get CPQ to go that route in '95 but got shot down by the internal engineering teams. I think this is a good way for Dell to offer a full range enterprise product. But they don't have quite the same economies as CPQ in this space, so their growth will probably not be as rapid as in servers, and the contribution to the bottom line will also be affected. The question (already posed several times) is whether it makes sense for Dell to buy DG to get the clariion line and some of the high end engineering and customers. That would be a strong statement that Dell intends to play in the enterprise.
