The yields have been the topic of comparison between AMD and INTEL since the early 1970s. AMD frequently chooses more aggressive layout
rules than Intel resulting in many times a smaller die size and more
yield candidates per wafer. Intel frequently has been more conservative in layout rules and gets a higher percentage yield per wafer but fewer yield candidates. These comparisons are sometimes muddled because Intel goes to the next generation feature size sooner and may be using .25 microns rules when AMD is using .35 micron rules making such comparison more difficult.

When comparing economies of yields, the number of good die at a given performance level is the primary object measurement. The highest percentage yields is good primarily for bragging rights. Intel has frequently had the high percentage yields. AMD may be very competitive when comparing sellable die per wafer.

The debates about yield will never end. AMD does not have to match
the percentage yield of Intel to establish a strong #2 position in the CPU chip business. As #2, AMD can be very successful and profitable along with a successful and profitable Intel. If AMD succeeds in their strategy AMD will achieve much, much more percentage growth than Intel.

I own both AMD and INTEL. I hope for outstanding returns from AMD and good returns from INTEL. The PC business is big and still rapidly growing despite Asia.
