<Routers as they exist will be extinct in 3 years> the extermination process has already started and will be extinct in less than two years, imo.
It's simply plain in-efficient to forward hop-by-hop as opposed to taking advantage of the virtual circuit aggregated next-hop switched mode of the underlying switching network.
