I think the argument for IE for Macintosh is similar to IE for UNIX. When you look at this issue, you want to look at the whole picture not some individual product. Why you are able to buy a cellular phone for 1c? Because the seller wants to hook you to their service. MSFT offers IE for Macintosh free could be rewarded if the Macintosh user uses IE to go to MSN or CarPoint to buy a new car. The company who uses IE for Macintosh may decide later to buy Office98 instead of other company's product because IE cooperates with Office98 better so they don't need to change their current environment. Some companies may prefer to buy most of their software from one shop so they could save some hustle to deal with multiple vendors. IE may just be a small factor in those decisions. But if companies build those small things here and there, they maybe win many customers later.
