STRENGTH IN NUMBERS: The new operating system that Sun Microsystems Inc. unveiled this week at a big New York shindig is called Solaris 7.0. That would imply, of course, that the previous version of the software was called Solaris 6.0. Far from it. Sun currently is shipping a version dubbed Solaris 2.6. But with archrival Microsoft expected to come out next year with Windows NT 5.0, Sun figured it needed to up the ante, version number-wise. "Yeah, it was a marketing thing," concedes Sun exec Ed Zander about the odometer resetting. However, the marketing folks at Microsoft seemed to have anticipated the Sun move. In a big-time end-run, Microsoft now says it will rename NT as Windows 2000.
