Anyone worried about a President Hillary?

She wouldn't have a chance at dog catcher Hillary.

Hillary's touch

Polls continue to demonstrate the amazing ability of Hillary Rodham Clinton to sink Democratic Senate candidates. As reported here earlier, the first lady spent three days last week campaigning for Illinois Sen. Carol Moseley-Braun -- and apparently helped decrease the Democratic incumbent's popularity.

The latest poll of likely voters by Illinois Wesleyan University, released Tuesday, shows that --with a little help from the first lady -- Mrs. Moseley-Braun now trails her GOP challenger, state Sen. Peter Fitzgerald, by 22 percentage points. A week ago, in another poll, she was only 17 points behind.

Now, it looks like Mrs. Clinton is trying to use her magic to torpedo Democratic Rep. Charles E. Schumer's challenge to Sen. Alfonse M. D'Amato, New York Republican.

The first lady has made three appearances in New York for the Schumer campaign, The latest was Tuesday's $500 plate luncheon "attended mostly by gays and lesbians," according to the Associated Press, where Mrs. Clinton "pointedly attacked" Mr. D'Amato "for failing to enact" hate crimes legislation. Guess what? A New York Post tracking poll published yesterday shows Mr. Schumer's four-point lead -- 43 percent to 39 percent on Friday -- has since slipped to 42 percent to 40 percent. Did Mrs. Clinton help cut Mr. Schumer's lead in half?
