Correct.

Not that I know of except as a lever for applications as pointed out
by others on this thread.

Yes and they have. There have been several "Clean room" implementations of Java such as Roaster and I think the OSF
group is doing (has done??) one.

The big advantage that I think Sun is going to see from Java is
(Short term) a calling card into many companies to sell other products.

and long term more flexibility. I have heard too often how companies
have ignored other OS's because the applications are not there. The
OS would have been better for the Company but if they couldn't get
the software they needed what good was it. Well, Java can change that
and allow more competition in the OS arena and I think Sun can benifit
a great deal from that. (being an initial implementer of those
applications couldn't hurt either :->)
