<< Interesting excerpts from Ney's book, but I don't see the
direct relevance to my post. Are you suggesting that the
price volatility I refer to stem exclusively from mm's efforts?>>

In his last book, "Making it in the Market", Ney goes into great detail on how they are able to do this. He provides case charts, trade data and records of specialist short positions in many Dow stocks. If you agree that a stocks price can be manipulated for 1 or 2 points short term, then all the MMs need to do is expand that into a longer term plan. Of course in doing so inventory, accumulation and distribution problems become more complex and require strategies to involved to go into in greater detail here. His charting methods are very unique and at times difficult to grasp, but i would recommend this book and his prior publication.
