CDMA and Roaming:
Re: article on CDMA in China with quote: ''I think it's a tough sell when you can't roam with a Qualcomm handset,''

Hello folks,

As someone pointed out this is a mere play of words -- misleading to say the least. But the article correctly points out that "Until infrastructure is built up, CDMA users would only be able to use their phones in limited areas, sacrificing inter-city mobility for phone owners"

Of course you can roam with CDMA phones, Qualcomm's or whomever else's for that matter -- for example with both Airtouch (cellular in So.Cal) and Sprint (nationwide PCS) networks you can roam between cities with Qualcomm's phones.

Roaming (between different cellular or PCS systems) largely depends on infrastructure capabilities rather than the air-interface. North American wireless networks primarily use the IS-41 protocol for inter-system (e.g. inter-city, inter-carrier) roaming. Networks that sport CDMA as their air-interface predominantly use relevant parts of IS-41 to implement roaming.

So, the issue of roaming is largely dependent on how the carrier deploys its infrastructure network across cities. If IS-41/SS7 networking is enabled between systems, of course, roaming is just one of the many features that become available.

Thanks,

Sudeepto.
