Revolutionary Airbag: Safe for Every Passenger in the Car
First After-Market Airbag Inflates Away from Passengers and Installs Easily
PACIFICA, Calif., Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The Angel Airbag(TM), a newly patented airbag system that inflates away from the passenger, was announced today by Woleko Industries, Inc. This unique airbag system can be installed on any lap belt in any car, truck or van. For the first time, car owners can have safety bags installed at a fraction of the cost, in rear seats as well as in cars produced before the availability of air bags.
Unlike airbag systems installed today, the Angel Airbag inflates in the same direction that the passenger moves during a collision, cushioning riders from the potential point of impact, while protecting them from flying debris and glass. The Angel Airbag does not use super-heated, nauseous gasses to inflate, nor does it travel at dangerous speeds toward passengers, reducing the risk of serious harm from the airbag itself.
"Instead of attacking passengers with violent force, followed by an equally ferocious `counter-punch' of current airbags, the Angel Airbag truly cushions the crash impact," said Woody Wojdylak, chairman of Woleko Industries. "Airbags have come under fire recently for injuring or killing passengers, the Angel Airbag simply provides a better solution that is safe for children and small adults."
New Direction For Passenger Airbag Safety Systems
The Angel Airbag is an inflatable, acrylic-backed nylon airbag, which attaches to the lap belt of an automobile. There are two self-contained components of the Angel Airbag connected to each other with a special electric cable. The first component is the crash sensor. This sensor is attached to the fire wall inside the cab of the vehicle. A cable runs along the floor of the vehicle to the second component, the airbag pouch. A C02/Nitrogen cartridge and electronic release valve are housed inside the airbag pouch. When an accident occurs, the crash sensor's "smart circuit" determines the need for inflation, and an electronic signal is sent to the release valve which opens the gas container and inflates the airbag. The entire process occurs in less than 50 milliseconds.
The Angel Airbag prototype passed a series of exhaustive safety crash tests at Wayne State University in Michigan, and has been fully approved for commercial production. Executives at Woleko expect to have the Angel Airbag in stores by the Summer of 1997. The retail price is expected to be $495, including installation.
"I am thrilled that consumers will finally have a viable option for equipping their cars with airbags that don't cost thousands of dollars," said L.E. Bailey Boydston, Angel Airbag co-inventor. "After years of testing, we can really prove we built a better mousetrap."
The "omni-sensing" mechanism of the Angel Airbag senses crash impacts over a distributed area of the front-end of the automobile, but the Angel Airbag does not trigger with softer "bumps." Depending on the placement of the system sensors and the air pouches, the Angel Airbag can provide safety in rear-end, side-impact or front-end collisions.
Authorized Installation Centers
Installation costs of the Angel Airbag are included in the retail price. Once the sensor unit is installed by an authorized service center, the airbag pouch is portable -- active from any seat in the car -- and effective in any other vehicle with an Angel Airbag sensor system. If deployed, the fees for repacking the Angel Airbag will be approximately $150, significantly below the fee for factory installed airbags.
