Played the Heretic II demo last night. Its a midevil, first-person-shooter-in-third-person-viewpoint game based on the Quake2 engine.
I found the third-person-view stuff worked, but didn't really add anything to the experience (probably hurt things somewhat in places). While the game doesn't look like Quake2 (or, thankfully, its add-on packs), it's not nearly as visually interesting as "Unreal" either. The Monster AI was not particularly challenging either.
Probably the most interesting feature aside from the 3rd person view is the large number of different "moves" that your character can do. In addition to walk/run/jump/crawl that we're all used to, you can also roll, pole vault, grab a ledge and pull yourself up (ABOUT TIME!), kick, and several other variants I haven't figured out yet. The downside to this is the sheer number of key combinations you need to remember to perform these stunts. While many are intuitive, they can be overwhelming at first.
You can download the demo 38MB(!) from bluesnews.com
