Why?

Because it's total spin. It smells bad. It makes the company smell bad.

That the company feels the way to defend itself is to draw a very dubious connection between Asensio, who would profit from stock they shorted on the open market, and stock promotion schemes, where the newsletters were paid in stock or options to print favorable articles in their newsletters without disclosing the payments, IMHO smacks of dishonest management.

I find this level of innuendo in an official company PR to be bothersome. A granted interview is "caught on tape?" I find it amusing that HEB says Asensio's "scheme" has failed because the stock is up 66% off its low, especially since it's far less impressive but just as truthful to say that the stock is about even since the short recommendation and down about 15% from the intraday high since then. They seem to be almost desperate to get the stock price up right now.

I wouldn't do a handshake deal with either Asensio or HEB, that's for sure.
