Is there anything AMD can do to prevent this?

AMD has several possibilities.

1. If the K7 comes out on time, it will offer a better instruction set and better performance than Katmai.

2. They could add Katmai instructions to the K6/K7 product line.

Either strategy gives Intel an advantage for some period of time however.
