I think your assumptions may be correct, especially concerning the decreased cash position. The rapid run up in managed care contracting has to be funded (salaries, cost of drugs & supplies) with collections deferred 60 days or so.

Do you know if any of these contracts were capitated? If so, the cash comes in up front each month which would tend to weaken your point (although I think the contracts are discounted FFS from what I recall).
